Serena van der Woodsen is one of the most well-known and popular girls in the elite social scene on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. However, one day she departed for a Connecticut boarding school under mysterious circumstances, and then returned out of the blue for reasons equally unclear to her circle of friends and acquaintances. Now she’s back and popular as ever, but she is sometimes at odds with her fellow privileged youth. “Gossip Girl” follows Serena as she, her friends, enemies and frenemies grow up, prepare for college, interact, conflict with one another and experience relationship turmoil, deceit and deception. All the drama of the show is encapsulated by the narration and blogging of the titular, never seen Gossip Girl, who describes the events of the show and the character’s actions with a critical eye. As the show begins, Blair Waldorf has taken the spot vacated by Serena when she went off to boarding school, and is now the center of attention, but everything changes when Serena surprises everyone by returning. Though Blair and Serena are ostensibly friends, there can only be one queen in a hive of bees and now the two are at odds with one another. Other characters include aspiring writer and poet Dan Humphrey (who writes romantic prose inspired by Serena), Nate Archibald (who cannot decide who entices him more, Serena or Blair), Jenny Humphrey, (Dan’s young, naïve and easily manipulated sister), and Chuck Bass (the school’s Bad Boy who believes in living life to the fullest and most debauched). As viewers watch “Gossip Girl” they see that having rich parents doesn’t make going through high school much easier, especially when you have “friends” who are just as likely to steal your girlfriend or boyfriend as to help get you out of a jam.
